When your cruise ship docks in the port of Costa Maya, embark on a 3.5-hour shore excursion to Chacchoben. Chacchoben Mayan Ruins is the most popular and visited attraction for a day in Costa Maya. It is approximately 50 minutes drive from Costa Maya Port. This site is just a few kilometers from the village of Chacchoben from which it's name derive. The translation of the Mayan word "Chacchoben" refers to "The Place Of The Red Corn". The structures at this site are characterized by large temples and massive platforms dated from 700 AD.

The first place to visit in the Bacalar Lagoon is “Cenote Esmeralda”, where you’ll be amazed by the different shades of blue and understand why the Bacalar Lagoon is frequently referred as the 7 colors lagoon. Our next stop is “Cenote Cocalitos”, home of stromatolites, that are known as living stones and are considered the oldest form of life in the planet.

The third point to enjoy will be “Black Cenote” which is an open sky cenote and also the deepest point of the lagoon.

The final spot to is the Pirate Channel, as you’ll be explained that day, pirates used to enter Bacalar by using this channel to steal local precious wood. You’ll also have a beautiful view of the different shades of blue of the Lagoon.

Take a short break eating some delicious fajitas with your favorite drink at the edge of the lagoon or just enjoy the breeze and incredible landscape.

At Chacchoben mayan ruins you’ll be leaded by a professional local guide. We will walk in the jungle to explore and learn about the different structures of the mayan site such as: Temple 24, Plaza B, Gran Plaza, Gran Basamento, Los Gemelos, Las Vasijas and Templo Uno.

You will meet your guide at a central location in Mahahual. From there, we will take you to the Chacchoben archaeological site where you will have a 1.5 hour guided tour with a native guide who will unveil the history of a Mayan city that flourished around 300 AD.

The activity is complemented with a walk under the jungle to explore and get to know the different structures on the site like: Templo 24, Plaza B, Gran Plaza, Gran Basamento, Los Gemelos, Las Vasijas and Temple One.

Here in Mahahual/Costa Maya we have 5 different underwater landscapes and dive sites among 3 ranges of depths (most of them are between 45 to 90 feet). Diving conditions are friendly and we enjoy an average 90 feet visibility. All our dives are boat dives (time from the jetty: 10 to 15 minutes).
